Shoverlay is a Mac menu bar app for screenshots, scrolling capture, screen recording, annotation, OCR, and pinned overlays. It requires macOS 11.5 or later. Captures stay on your Mac. There is no Kingfont account and no usage tracking.
1. Install
- Open Shoverlay on the Mac App Store and install it.
- Open the app. It appears in the menu bar. A Dock icon is optional — turn it on in Settings only if you want one.
- Click the menu bar icon, or press the shortcut you set, to start a capture.
2. Grant permissions
macOS will ask the first time a feature needs access. If a feature does nothing, check System Settings → Privacy & Security, then quit and reopen Shoverlay.
- Screen Recording — screenshots, scrolling capture, and recording the screen or system audio.
- Microphone — only if you record your voice.
- Camera — only if you add a webcam overlay while recording.
- Files — the first save to Downloads, Desktop, or Documents may ask for folder access.
3. Take a screenshot
Click the menu bar icon, or use a shortcut. All-In-One opens a picker on screen so you can choose the mode as you capture. You can also jump straight to a mode from the menu.
- Area — drag a rectangle. Hold to resize. You can lock an aspect ratio or type a pixel size in the picker.
- Previous Area — recapture the last rectangle without dragging again.
- Window — click one app window for a clean shot of that window.
- Scrolling — stitch a long page into one image. Scroll the page while Shoverlay captures, then stop when the stitch is complete.
- Fullscreen — the whole display.
- Timer — delay the shot so hover menus and tooltips stay visible.
- OCR — select an area and copy the text on screen. No image is required if you only need the words.
Optional: hide desktop icons, or replace the desktop with a wallpaper or a solid color, when you want a clean background.
4. Record the screen
- Choose Record from the menu or the All-In-One picker. Select an area, a window, or the full screen.
- Pick a format: MP4, MOV, GIF, or animated WebP.
- In Recording settings you can turn on system audio, the microphone, mono mix, a webcam overlay, click highlights, on-screen keystrokes, Do Not Disturb, dimming the display, and the recording timer.
- Stop from the recording toolbar. Trim the clip in the built-in editor if you asked Shoverlay to open it after recording.
5. After the shot
Quick Access appears on the capture. From there you can copy, save, open the annotator, pin the image above other windows, or run OCR on that image.
In Settings you decide the default after a screenshot or a recording: do nothing, copy, save, open the annotator, or pin.
History keeps recent captures so you can reopen, export, or delete them later. Still images export as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or WebP.
6. Annotate
Open the annotator from Quick Access or as the default after-capture action. Tools include arrows, shapes, text, highlighter, pixelate, spotlight, blur, and step counters. Crop, change the background, or insert another image.
7. Pin an overlay
Pin keeps the capture floating above other apps so you can match a design, a ticket, or a reference while you work. In Advanced settings you can add rounded corners, a shadow, or a border on pinned images. Drag the pin, resize it, and close it when you are done.
8. Shortcuts and Settings
Every capture mode can have its own global shortcut. Open Settings from the menu bar. Under Advanced you can remember the last All-In-One selection and set filename templates for screenshots and recordings.
9. Troubleshooting
- Capture or recording does nothing — grant Screen Recording, quit Shoverlay, and open it again.
- No system audio — Screen Recording permission is required on supported macOS versions. Check Recording settings and System Settings → Sound.
- No microphone or webcam overlay — enable Microphone and Camera for Shoverlay.
- Files will not save — allow folder access, or pick a folder each time in Settings.
