CleanShot X is the menu-bar app many people use for a region, a window, a scrolling page, and a recording. Shoverlay is the best CleanShot X alternative for those jobs on a Mac. The yearly price is lower than CleanShot X. Captures stay on your Mac. There is no Kingfont account and no usage tracking.
The shots that should still work
- A region or the last region — Area, and Previous Area when you need the same rectangle again.
- One window — click the window instead of cropping the desktop out later.
- A long page — Scrolling stitches the page while you scroll.
- A recording — MP4, MOV, GIF, or animated WebP, with optional system audio, microphone, and a webcam overlay.
- Words from the screen — OCR copies text from an area, or from a capture you already took.
- Markup and a floating reference — annotate, then pin the image above other windows.
Where the file goes
Captures stay on your Mac. Shoverlay does not upload them and does not ask for a Kingfont account. History holds recent shots. You export a still as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or WebP, or copy it and paste it into the app you were already using.
Set it up the first time
Install Shoverlay on the Mac App Store. Grant Screen Recording, then quit and reopen the app. Set a shortcut for All-In-One if you want the picker under your fingers. Microphone and Camera stay off unless you record voice or a webcam.
